Bells of Steel Power Rack 4.1

The Bells of Steel Power Rack 4.1 is a budget-friendly no-frills rack. It’s ideally suited for beginner or recreational lifters, but with a 700lb capacity, it can also be used by advanced lifters on a budget.

This is Bells of Steel’s most economical full-size rack. It’s constructed with 2.3×2.3 steel, it offers 5/8″ holes, and it comes with a lifetime warranty.

Features & Highlights

  • Steel Size – The Power Rack 4.1 from Bells of Steel is constructed with 2.3×2.3 11-gauge steel and it’s assembled with a bolt-together design. This size tubing is unique to Bells of Steel. While they offer numerous attachments for the rack, compatibility with outside companies is very limited.
  • 4-Post Design – As a 4-post rack, you’ll save some space and money compared to a 6-post rack. With most 4-post racks, plate storage on the back uprights can be tricky. With the Power Rack 4.1, there are no side holes, so plate storage isn’t possible. There are, however, two vertical posts on the back of the base that can be used for plate storage. This not only helps organize your plates, but it also creates stability in the rack.
  • Hole/Hardware Sizing – This rack uses 5/8″ hardware, which is a very common hardware size on power racks. The rack will accommodate all of Bells of Steel’s attachments, but outside compatibility is limited due to the tube sizing (read more in the compatibility section below).
  • Hole Spacing – The BoS Power Rack 4.1 offers 2″ spacing throughout the uprights. This is a standard feature on many racks, especially of this style, though it doesn’t offer the Westside hole spacing some lifters prefer. If you like Westside spacing, the Bells of Steel Utility Power Rack or Power Rack 5.1 may be more suitable.
  • Exterior Rack Dimensions – This is a fairly space-friendly rack with a total length of 55.1″ and a total width of 63.8″. In terms of the uprights themselves, the dimensions are 33.8″ deep and 47.2″ wide. This width is generally considered to be beneficial over wider racks (49″) because it gives you more room to cleanly un-rack and re-rack your bar without concern of clipping the uprights with the plates on the bar. The rack can be purchased with a 72″ height or an 84.5″ height. This is great if you have a very low ceiling clearance, but tall users may find both options to be a bit short.
  • Interior Rack Dimensions – The interior lifting area measures 29.1″ deep, which is a very comfortable space.
  • Safety Options – This rack includes powder-coated pipe safeties that extend off the front of the rack to serve as extra J-cups if needed. Bells of Steel additionally sells suspension spotter straps that you connect to the top crossmembers. They also sell safety spotter arms that extend off the front of the rack.
  • Bolt-Down Not Required – With the Power Rack 4.1, you do not need to bolt it to the ground or to a platform given its rear support. It does come with concrete anchors if you’d prefer to bolt it down, however.

What’s Included in the Box

The Bells of Steel Power Rack 4.1 includes several pieces as standard:

  • (2) Triple Padded J-Cups
  • (2) Pipe Safeties
  • (1) 1.25″ Diameter Pull-Up Bar (Bare Steel Finish)
  • (4) 72″ or 84.5″ Uprights
  • (2) 29″ Crossmembers
  • (1) Base including rear support with 2 storage posts
  • Concrete Anchors*

* Concrete anchors are provided, but not required for this rack since it has a flat-foot design. If you would like to bolt it down, you have that option. If you’re bolting into a platform, I recommend using lag screws that you can find at your local home improvement store.

Attachment Compatibility

The Bells of Steel Power Rack 4.1 is constructed with 2.3×2.3 steel and 5/8″ hardware, which is compatible with Bells of Steel Attachments.

Some attachments that I think are worthy of consideration include the Lat/Low Row Attachment, the Lever Arms, the Suspension Straps, the Y-Dip Attachment, and the Adjustable Monolift.

The Lat/Low row allows you to perform cable movements off the back of the rack, the lever arms open up a variety of movement possibilities, the suspension straps are more protective of your barbell compared to pipe safeties,  the Y-Dip gives the option to perform rack-mounted dips, and the adjustable monolift eliminates the walk-out on squats and makes bench press much more efficient.

As for attachment compatibility outside of Bells of Steel, because they use an odd tube size, options are very limited. They do use a standard 5/8″ hole, so any attachment that only uses the hole will work. An example would be a landmine attachment. Any attachment that wraps around an upright, however, will not work without modification. An example would be a J-Cup. Three notable places to look for 5/8″ attachments are Rogue Fitness, Titan Fitness, and Fringe Sport.

What They’re Saying at Bells of Steel

The Bells of Steel Power Rack 4.1 receives good feedback from users. With an average rating of 4.7/5, here are some of the things people have said at bellsofsteel.us.

Positive

  • “This is a great rack! I was debating between this rack, and the Titan T2. So glad I went with the Bells of Steel rack! The upgrades on this rack put it over the edge for me. The white plastic sleeves on the safety bars are a nice touch, and help protect your bar. Same goes for the j-hooks. I also love that this rack had a powder coat, and from what I can see, the Titan T2 does not. The Bells of Steel logo plate on the back of the rack, I feel add some extra class to the look. I think it would be hard to find a better rack for the money. Will definitely buy from BOS again!”
  • “Sturdy piece of equipment. This was the perfect addition to our garage gym. With the added lat pull-down attachment it has taken my workouts to another level.”
  • “Overall fantastic rack for the price. super easy to assemble and adjust as needed. even has some extra plate storage if you really need it! the pin-pipe safeties may seem a little “thin” overall but I’m sure there’s a way for BoS to make a more “solid” type of safety that could use 2 holes on front and back to “bolt” it in place or something. would love to see options for somehow adding band anchors at the bottom like the higher end racks or having support/load plates on some of the parts so the tubing doesn’t deflect during assembly but it doesn’t affect operation or quality in any way. would 100% recommend to anyone looking for a great budget rack to get started in their own home!”
  • “Loving it so far…bought it as a 2nd rack to use outdoors on nicer days (It’s kept under a roof overhang and covered with a tarp when not in use) Lightweight but sturdy and well built. I’m able to lift it and move it around the backyard to get some sun. J cups are nicely padded which is nice on the barbells. For the price I don’t know that you’ll find a better rack. Highly recommend.
  • “Very happy with it so far. Fits great in my small garage and has the versatility I was looking for. I added the y-dip attachment to start but will probably add more accessories in future. Excellent customer service.”

Critical

  • “The pull up bar is slick for me, and I tend to stay away from chalk (Which doesn’t help!). I don’t think knurling would be the answer, but I’d prefer something with a bit more grip. The safety bars stick when changing heights, and the tips look like they were rusting out of the box. I have yet to try using a bit of food safe grade oil on them, to see if I can loosen them up. Other than those 2 things, this unit has been great. Solid and well built!”
