Rogue B&R Bar

The Rogue B&R Bar is a bare steel multipurpose bar developed alongside Mike Burgener and Mark Rippetoe.

This bar is spec’d more as a power bar with a 29mm shaft, but it’s dual knurl rings make it possible to perform a variety of lifts.

Everything about this bar is raw, including the shaft and the sleeves. It offers an impressive 205,000 PSI tensile strength, grooved sleeves, and bronze bushings. The knurl is considered moderate in terms of aggressiveness and it does include a center knurl, which is more passive even than the outer knurl.

This bar is made in the USA and it includes a lifetime warranty.

Here are some further details about the bar:

Features & Highlights

  • Bare Steel – Bare Steel is the most cost-effective “finish” available because… well… it’s not finished in anything. Because of that, it ranks very highly in the ‘feel’ department. You’ll get a completely raw texture that provides outstanding grip. It also takes chalk very well. The downside to bare steel is that it’s very prone to oxidation. There is no preventing it, although 3-in-1 oil or similar is commonly used to mitigate it.
  • 29mm Shaft – The 29mm shaft on the B&R Bar is consistent with powerlifting standards, so squats, bench press, and deadlifts will excel with this bar. On the other hand, you won’t get quite the same response on Olympic-style lifts that you would with a 28.5 or 28mm multipurpose bar.
  • Center Knurl – This bar does include a center knurl, but it’s more passive than the rest of the bar. If you’re looking for some texture but not too much, this may be appealing to you.
  • Grooved Sleeves – The sleeves on this bar have fine grooves that help keep the plates on the bar better when you’re not using collars. The downside is that grooved sleeves make an audible zip noise when loading/unloading plates.
  • American Made – This bar is made in America.

What They’re Saying at Roguefitness.com

The Rogue B&R Bar receives very good feedback from users. With an average rating of 4.8/5, here are some of the things people are saying at roguefitness.com:

Positive

  • “I have owned this bar for I think seven years now and it has held up wonderfully. I’ve neglected to use the WD-40; it still stands up. Knurling is aggressive. I have used it for powerlifting, bodybuilding, and Olympic lifts. I have trained myself, and trained others. As a new father, I hope to train my children on it. Worth every penny.”
  • “I bought this bar as a companion to my black zinc Ohio bar. At first I was a bit skeptical of a bare steel bar due to increased maintenance but after feeling it in hand, I might go bare steel for life! There is something about not having a coating that really connects you to the bar and weight. I also really like the knurl on the B&R – it is the perfect balance of gripiness without being too sharp.”
  • “I’ve had the bar for 4 years now, and it has been perfect. Use it for powerlifting, strength training, and even doing some olympic lifts, and it hasn’t disappointed. If you are looking for a bar that is reliable, durable, and performs great, then this is the bar for you.”
  • “I wanted a 29mm bar without the aggressive knurl for overhead pressing and bench work. Up to now I have used the 45# power bar and Castro bar this is like their offspring same knurl as the Castro bar with the center knurl and stiffness of the power bar. Perfect!”
  • “This is a beautiful barbell. The knurling is aggressive but not overly aggressive. I own the Ohio bar, Ohio powerbar, rogue curl bar & the Ohio deadlift bar and this is by far the best barbell. The knurling is right in between the Ohio bar & the Ohio powerbar. The bar arrived spotless with absolutely no rust. As soon as I inboxed it, I coated it with 3in1 oil. The bare steel feel is like no other. Absolute perfection! I recommend this to all powerlifters and bodybuilders.”
  • “This bar is glorious. Bars steel feel is unmatched. It’s knurling is very grippy without being overly aggressive. I will never want another coated barbell again. Great work rogue, I love this bar.”

Critical

  • “I wish the bar had a more aggressive center knurl, as it doesn’t grip too well to the back of your clothing. One feature I am not a fond of is the ribbed sleeves. Aside from creating metal shaving when sliding the plates on and off, it makes it difficult to add and remove plates as well as removing the collars. I use the Rogue aluminum collars and the rubber inserts make it unnecessarily difficult to take on and off.
Overall, it’s a nice bar, but with the higher price tag and unwanted features, I would recommend the OPB in bare steel.”
  • “Only complaint I have is the knurling isn’t as aggressive as I’d like, even with high rep sets, but that’s personal preference.”
