Rogue SML-2 Squat Stand

The Rogue SML-2 Squat Stand is one of Rogue’s most popular squat stands. Built with 3×3 11-gauge steel uprights, 5/8″ holes, and Westside spacing, there’s a lot to like about this rack.

This rack differs from the SML-2C in that it doesn’t offer color options and it doesn’t offer optional laser-cut numbering on the uprights. Otherwise, it’s the same stand for slightly cheaper.

Features & Highlights

  • Steel Size – The SML-2 Squat Stand from Rogue is a part of their Monster Lite lineup. It’s constructed with 3×3 11-gauge steel and it’s assembled with a bolt-together design. 3×3 steel is popular for its strength, attachment compatibility, and its overall aesthetic.
  • Flat Foot Design – One of the biggest benefits of a squat stand is that you don’t have to bolt it down because of the flat foot design. This U-shaped base keeps the rack secure to the floor. During heavy sets when re-racking your bar, you may find the rack will shift slightly. This is normal for a squat stand – the overall stability of the stand is very strong and safe. If you do want to mount this to the floor or a platform for stability, you can purchase the S-Base Mounting Feet separately.
  • Hole/Hardware Sizing – This rack uses 5/8″ hardware, which is one of the most common hardware sizes used on power racks. The rack will accommodate most of Rogue’s Monster Lite Attachments/Accessories as well as some from other companies (read more in the compatibility section below).
  • Hole Spacing – The SML-2 offers Westside hole spacing, which is a common feature on 5/8″ racks. The holes are spaced 1″ apart through the bench zone, allowing for finer adjustments on your J-cups and safeties. This can be useful for people who are “in-between” sizes. Above and below the Westside section are holes with standard 2″ spacing between them.
  • Exterior Rack Dimensions – Another benefit of a squat stand is that it offers a smaller footprint than most other racks. This rack has a total width of 49″ and a total depth of 48″. A 49″ width is fairly common for 3×3 racks, but one of the downsides is you have less room between the uprights and the plates. This requires a more efficient walk-out/re-rack since there’s a greater risk of hitting the uprights with your plates. The total height of this squat stand is 92″.
  • Pull-Up Bar – The SML-2 can be purchased with a single 1.25″ pull-up bar or with a fat/skinny bar directly on the product page. From there, you can upgrade to the socket pull-up bar, which includes different colors, finishes, and options for knurling.
  • Safety Options – This stand does not come with any safety options as standard. It is highly recommended that you purchase the safety spotter arms so that you can confidently lift on the rack. These spotter arms can also allow for rack pulls and other movements.
  • No Color Options – The Rogue SML-2 is only available in Rogue’s standard matte black powder coat.
  • Made in America – The SML-2 is made in Ohio.

What’s Included in the Box

The Rogue SML-2 Squat Stand includes the following pieces as standard:

  • (2) Monster Lite J-Cups with UHMW Lining
  • (1) 43″ Single 1.25″ Pull-Up Bar OR (1) 43″ Fat/Single Skinny Pull-Up Bar
  • (1) Flat Foot Base
  • (2) 90″ Uprights with Side Holes

Optionally, you can purchase the wheel bracket for easy portability or the S-Base feet for bolting the rack down. You can also purchase a barbell, a bench, and some plates directly on the product page to create a complete package.

Attachment Compatibility

The Rogue SML-2 Squat Stand is constructed with 3×3 steel and 5/8″ hardware, which is compatible with Rogue’s Monster Lite Attachments.

Here you can add additional accessories to your rack or you can upgrade the ones that come standard with the SML-2.

Some attachments that I think are worthy of consideration include the Adjustable Monolift, the Sandwich J-Cups, the Socket Pull-Up Bar, and the Spotter Arms.

The monolift eliminates the squat walk-out and makes bench setup easier, the sandwich cups are a big improvement over the standard J-cups, the socket pull-up bar is an enhancement, and the spotter arms are essential for safety.

As for attachment compatibility outside of Rogue Fitness, notable places to look are REP Fitness and Titan Fitness. Each of these companies offers attachments that will fit 3×3 and 5/8″ hardware (REP PR-4000 and Titan X-3). One thing to keep in mind is that imported racks use the metric system vs. the imperial system on USA-made racks. This means that hole spacing will be slightly shorter. If you find an attachment that has two pins (or a single pin with a second hitch pin) then it may not fit properly. Single-pin attachments tend to work fine.

What They’re Saying at Rogue Fitness

The Rogue SML-2 Squat Stand receives great feedback from users. With an average rating of 4.9/5, here are some of the things people have said at roguefitness.com.

Positive

  • “I purchased the Rogue SML-2 90″ squat stand a little over a month ago. I got the stand with the option spotter arms, which I think are a must with something like this. Combined with the spotter arms, this is basically a squat rack. This thing is solid. I don’t miss having a full sized rack. I can do everything with confidence on this. You can immediately tell that the unit is overbuilt. The steel is heavy, the coating is heavy-duty, the nuts/bolts are the proper grade. Even the triangular supports at the bottom of each vertical beam are heavy. The holes on the rack allow for any height setting you need. You can bench press with this, you can squat with it, etc. The height increments are perfect. The pullup bar has a good circumference and feel to it and can be set to whatever height you want as well. I highly recommend the Rogue SML-2.”
  • “This rack is the perfect height for all around exercises. From Squats, bench press, shoulder press, pull-ups, muscle ups, and Toes to bar!! I’m a very satisfied customer.”
  • “I bought this stand for my home gym along with the spotter arms and additional pull-up bar. This stand is amazing. Very sturdy when doing bench, squats, shrugs, pull-ups, etc… Zero wobble. I highly recommend.”
  • “I bought this stand about 3 months ago. For the past year and a half, I was using dumbbells, kettlebells, etc. Decided to finally get a stand and barbell setup for the home gym and add to it going forward. Rogue equipment is overbuilt really – very sturdy and well-built, I’ll be passing this and the rest of my Rogue equipment down to my kids.”
  • “Finally pulled the trigger and ordered this stand along with some bumper plates, a barbell, plate tree, and various other Rogue gear. I couldn’t be happier with this squat stand! It has a small footprint yet holds my weight for weighted pull-ups/inversions. My garage gym is my new happy place now!”
  • “Solidly built M-Lite rack. Very happy I paid for premium quality vice trying to save a buck. One can’t go wrong buying ROGUE products. Don’t have a lot of space, but it fits and looks nice in my family room. Products have my highest recommendation.”

Critical

  • “1. Without bolting it onto the floor it rocks and moves out of place way too much. This stand doesn’t weight that much, I am able to pick it up (fully assembled) and move it around the garage, so its no surprise when I un-rack/rack on bench or squat it moves around. 2. Placing in the spotter arms and adjusting them is always a pain in the rear. There are only SPECIFIC holes that align both the top part and the bottom, without marking your rack its pretty much a guessing game. 3. Wide grip pullups with the fat/skinny bar are awkward. In my case, the skinny bar is on top and the fat on bottom. Chin ups with the fat bar is fine, however, pull ups with the top bar causes my forearms to be locked into a perfectly vertical position and causes some strain on my shoulder (doesn’t occur if i wide grip on the lower/fat bar).”
