What Type of Bench are you Looking For?

    The International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) regulates that a bench height must be between 42cm (~16.5") and 45cm (~17.7"). If you're training specifically for powerlifting, having a bench within these specs is a good idea.

    IPF height is also generally a very comfortable height for most users, and it also allows for adequate leg drive when lifting.

    There are, however, several flat benches that are on the cusp of IPF height, so it's not a deal breaker, especially if you're a taller lifter.

    A Tripod design, also known as a single-post design, has a single, narrow foot at the front of the bench. This provides more room for your feet to find a comfortable position, and it also helps generate better leg drive for many users.

    A bench with wheels makes it much easier to move the bench around the gym. Generally, a bench with a tripod design will offer wheels, while most non-tripod benches will not.

    A telescoping spine is generally a crescent-shaped steel bar with laser cutouts at various elevations. A pop-pin secures the position and sets the angle of the bench. This is a very secure mechanism, but it does take slightly longer to set-up each time.

    A ladder style bench uses a hinging arm to set the angle along a series of notches typically on the bottom frame. This is a secure and very fast adjustment mechanism.
